CPELanka blog offers our Heartiest Congratulations on the opening of Sri Lanka's First-of-its-kind Waste to Energy Power Plant in Sri Lanka. The first sustainable energy power plant to generate electricity using garbage in Sri Lanka is declared opened today. The power plant will generate 10MW of renewable energy using solid waste collected daily by the Colombo Municipal Council. On 17th Feb 2021, Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa commissioned a 10 MegaWatt waste-to-energy plant that will incinerate 600 to 800 tonnes of municipal waste collected in the capital Colombo. The plant 15 billion rupees plant was built by Western Power Company (Pvt) Ltd, a unit of Sri Lanka’s Aitken Spence group.
As per our best of knowledge:
Plant capacity: 10 MW
Cost of investment: 15 billion LKR
Involved parties: CEB, Colombo Municipal Council, Western Power Company (Pvt) Ltd, a unit of Sri Lanka’s Aitken Spence group and HNB bank
CEB is going to buy electricity @ 26 LKR per unit (per kWh).
