Charles Davidson graduated from Purdue with a degree in chemical engineering in 1972. He has spent more than 30 years in the oil and gas business, including executive positions with Noble Energy Inc. and Atlantic Richfield Co.
Purdue says the gift will fund multiple endowments aimed at recruiting, retaining and advancing top faculty, developing new teaching and research programs, upgrading research equipment and supporting graduate students. Part of the Davidsons' gift will establish two named professorships, with one bearing their names.
Purdue President Mitch Daniels announced the gift Friday during the President's Council Annual Dinner. He says the Davidsons are "a great part of the reason that Purdue enjoys renowned status on the world stage of universities and what keeps students coming from across the globe."
The gift is part of the Ever True: The Campaign for Purdue University fundraising effort. The school launched the public phase of the campaign, with the goal of raising $2.019 billion by 2019. That year marks the 150th anniversary of Purdue's founding and the 50th anniversary of alumnus Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon.
