A third year student following chemical engineering degree has ask me about "chemical engineering related software used in chemical industry" via a direct email to my dilantha@chempro.org
Answer:-
The chemical industrial software comes in wider range. From spreadsheet applications which designed to solve specified problems with very narrow scope to MATLAB simulink which cost several thousands of dollars which have written to solve very complex problems we can find in chemical engineering software industry.
As example this software have been written on Excel will solve problems related to an internal pressure thickness requirement and weld branch reinforcement calculation consistent with ASME B31.3. We can just ignore this kind of spreadsheets. Because if we go to solve this kind of problem with theoretical approach or using standard design software we will definelty have to spend more hours on it.
Example
ChemCad, Matlab simulation, molflow are some example of solutions to very complex problems
