subatomic particles travelling faster than the speed of light

In 1905 Albert Einstein told with is theory of special relativity, nothing travels fater than 186,282 miles (299,792 kilometers) per second. For many years this speed limit was a barrier but CERN lab near Geneva, Swisterland claims they have founded a subatomic particles travelling faster than the speed of light. These findings are critical as the modern physics is mainly build on Einstein's theories, so the scientists have been asked to re-confirm the result and also they invite other research institutes to carry on the research and help to evaluate the results.

If this claim is proven, there will be lot of new theories coming and the foundation of modern physics will be hardly questioned in future.

Sub-critical water – Definition

It is an intermediate state of water between normal water and supercritical water. Supercritical water is at a temperature and pressure above its critical point. (temperature >374°C, pressure >221 atm) Subcritical water lies below ranges of the critical points.  So simply it is a stage under supercritical water with controlled temperature and pressure according to the requirement of application.

Sub – critical water can be used as a cheap, non-toxic, non-flammable,  clean solvent in organic chemical research and even commercial applications.

Following research is example usage of sub-critical water as solvent in hydroxymethylfurfural research.

Research: Dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in sub-critical water over heterogeneous zirconium phosphate catalysts by Feridoun Salak and Hiroyuki Yoshida of Osaka Prefecture University.

Why we need to buy BPA free bottles?

Recently I was looking for a plastic water bottle, which I planned to use for day today life. I came across with many cheap bottles and tend to buy them due to the low price. But suddenly the facts about bottles with BPA came to my mind and I decided to buy "BPA free bottle" although it is quite expensive than common bottle

What is BPA?

"Bisphenol A, commonly abbreviated as BPA, is an organic compound with two phenol functional groups. It is used to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins, along with other applications. " – source wikipedia

Why we need to avoid BPA in frequently used items?

Bisphenol A works as an ingredient, which mimics human body hormones and causes disputes in its hormones system. Medical institutes have conduct many researches on Bisphenol A and found possible causes of Obesity, Neurological issues, Disruption of the dopaminergic system and many of other effects on human body.

Is BPA banned in countries?

Not in many countries, but in 2010 Canada was the first country to consider it asa toxic substance. Up to now European union and Canada has banned BPA especially in baby bottles .

In conclusion it is better to avoid BPA contain bottles and containers for drinking purposes as it may easily contaminate your drinks with BPA and causes many threats (which are being research at the movement )

Chemical Engineering Interview Questions and Answers

Here are some common chemical engineering interview questions, along with some potential good answers:

  1. What is chemical engineering, and why did you choose to study it?

"Chemical engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the design, optimization, and management of chemical processes and equipment. I chose to study chemical engineering because I have always been interested in chemistry and wanted to apply my knowledge to practical problems. I also appreciate the diversity of industries and applications that chemical engineering can be used in, and I was drawn to the opportunity to make a positive impact through my work."

  1. How do you apply the principles of chemical engineering in your work?

"I apply the principles of chemical engineering in my work by using my knowledge of chemistry, math, and engineering principles to design and optimize chemical processes and equipment. I also use my skills in problem-solving and data analysis to troubleshoot issues and improve existing processes. For example, I have used mass and energy balance calculations to optimize the design of a reactor, and I have used statistical analysis to identify trends in process data and identify areas for improvement."

  1. Can you describe a specific project you have worked on that demonstrates your skills as a chemical engineer?

"One project I worked on that demonstrates my skills as a chemical engineer was a process optimization project for a chemical manufacturing plant. I was part of a team that was tasked with improving the efficiency of the plant's production process. We used statistical analysis to identify areas of the process that were causing bottlenecks, and we implemented changes to the process that resulted in a significant increase in productivity. I contributed to the project by conducting process simulations to evaluate the impact of different process changes, and by developing a comprehensive report that outlined the results of the project and made recommendations for future improvements

Can iodized salt be used to help counter any radiation exposure?

I heard that many people gather iodized salt to prevent counter effect of any radiation exposure with the fear of Japanese nuclear crisis. But in order to achieve WHO recommended  dosage people will need to intake 80 tablespoons would be needed to equal one tablet which is not practical and healthy. So I think it is only myth of people to try iodized salt. In many cities in counties around Japan, there are salt shortage as people try to prevent them with iodized salt. But I think this is not a practical solution as it is not possible to intake required potassium iodide amount iodized salt.

Potassium iodide tablets to help counter effects of potential radioactivity Japan's reactors

Today BBC report that Potassium iodide tablets were distributed among some US crops to prevent counter effects of potential radioactivity Japan's reactors. And it is heard that people all over the world searching for this tablet for help counter effects of potential radioactivity Japan's reactors.

I search about this tablets and found that in 1982 US FDA has approved this tablet for protect thyroid glands from radioactive iodine involving accidents or fission emergencies.

For more details please visit Wikipedia page

I heard that people try to use iodized salt to get Potassium iodide to fight against potential threats but unfortunately it is only a myth as you need to take approximately 80 spoons to equal sufficient amount.

Lessons to learn from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster

globalvoicesonline.org

We had two main tragedies in Nuclear power industry; one in Chernobyl and other in Three Mile Island. I am sure, all nuclear experts around the world took these case studies to tighten their safety precautions. Now we have another disaster @ Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, Japan. However, this new accident widen up our angle to see the safety of nuclear power plants.  Analysis says failure of cooling systems after automatic shutdown @ 8.9 earthquake was the main cause behind series of blast in Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. As Japan is frequently subjected to earthquakes and tsunamis they might tighten their safety procedures for natural disasters. However the level of the impact of 8.9 earthquake might be very high than what they expected when they design and commissioning  Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

I think we must taken following factors in future discussions of nuclear safety

  1. 1.       Nuclear plants safety at natural disasters
  2. 2.       Shutting down procedures at natural disasters
  3. 3.       Effects on people who already affected by natural disaster (people without communication tools, transportation, … )
  4. 4.       Information management in emergency situation
  5. 5.       Effects on wind patterns at emergency situation

Explosion at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (Video)

A Massive Explosion occurred  at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant and we can see video of the blast on BBC. Several workers injured and experts measures the radioactive level of the site. This is third incident after Three Mile Island in the US in 1979, and Chernobyl in Ukraine in 1986. Definitely this accident will goes to history of Nuclear accident and even for industrial accident.

Due to safety procedures of nuclear power plant it was automatically shutdown after earth quake hits Fukushima. But one of cooling system of reactor was damaged and did not worked accordingly after the shutdown. This tends to meltdown one of reactor.

Must Additional Qualifications for better Chemical Engineering Carrier

We all know for any field of carrier there is too much competition for entering as a professional. Entrance exams, workshops and series of interviews; these are not new things to job seekers these days. When we are in selection process for a vacancy it is common we are fighting with people with same qualification most of time. Therefore, additional qualifications will play vital role in every selection process; especially to be come out of bunch of same qualified personal. What are to most seek additional qualifications of chemical engineering carrier these days?

Occupational Safety and Health

This does not mean that you have to follow up a diploma or degree program on this area. However, workshops, seminars or even short-term program will be more than enough with your basic qualification.

Certification in First Aid

We know as chemical engineers frequently deal with hazardous processes, it will be a value addition if you equipped with first aid skills. Do not think this as a huge burden of your study program. I think Red Cross Society provides nice short-term program on first aid and they even issue certificate, which is valid for couple of years.

Experience in CAD applications

If you are familiar with 2D – 3D computer aided design tools, it will be more advantage for you. Do not ever think that you need certificates to prove these skills. If you have used them in your study program especially in design project; add it up with your CV. Highlight your skill with computer aided programs.

Bio-methane as a transport fuel

The Team

"Bio-methane as a transport fuel” project has been started since 2007 by Department of Chemical & Process Engineering at University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. This project was funded by Ministry of Science and Technology, Sri Lanka. The main objective of this research project is to demonstrate the feasibility of using biogas as a transport fuel.

Project was initiated in the year of 2007 and construction of the pilot plant was completed in the middle of 2009 and thereafter development activities were started. In this research project, anaerobic co-digestion process technology is used for biogas production and canteen food waste was the main substrate with co-substrates of water hyacinth and Gliricidia. Produced biogas was upgraded to Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) by scrubbing and absorption processes implemented by the biogas research team in Department of Chemical & Process Engineering at University of Moratuwa.

In the process, firstly, separate the organic fraction of canteen food waste from canteen waste and crushed in a crusher mixed with co-substrate in the presence of high concentration of water. Then it pumps to continuous system tank reactor (CSTR) which is operating in anaerobic conditions. Biogas is producing in this reactor and effluent is used as an organic fertilizer. Produced biogas was upgraded to Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) by removing CO2 in scrubbing process and removing moisture in absorption process. The upgraded Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) was compressed into cylinders and used as a transport fuel.

The Biogas research team in department of Chemical & Process Engineering has been proved that Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) can used for ignite the engine as well as transport by conducting several test runs using a three wheeler. Demonstration nursery in the University of Moratuwa were resulted in remarkable fruits and vegetables from the pilot plant effluent used as a liquid organic fertilizer.
