AquaSim software and tutorials
I downloaded AquaSim demo version and some of tutorials as it is a recommended and used modeling package for our M. Sc course. The
AQUASIM has been designed to provide a more universal identification and simulation tool for a class of aquatic systems important in the
environmental sciences. An additional important program design criterion was user-friendliness, which was achieved not only by providing a graphical
user interface, but also by utilizing a communication "language" familiar to environmental scientists. AQUASIM is extremely exible in allowing the user
to specify transformation processes, and, in addition to perform simulations for the user-specied model, it provides elementary methods for parameter
identiability analysis, for parameter estimation and for uncertainty analysis.
AQUASIM was developed in the years 1991-1994 in the Computer and Systems Sciences department of the Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science
and Technology (EAWAG), CH-8600 Dubendorf, Switzerland, and it is maintained and extended since then. The program was designed mainly for internal use in research and
teaching, but is also available to the public.

My Carbon Foot Print
What is Carbon Foot Print?
The definition of the Carbon Foot Print can be as follows.
‘‘The total set of greenhouse gas emissions caused directly and indirectly by an [individual, event, organisation, product] expressed as CO2e.’’ 1
The carbon foot print of above parties encompasses three ways of carbon emissions.
1. Direct emissions that result from activities such as combustion of fuels, emission of gases during operation, production and manufacture, and running of a vehicle fleet
2. Emissions from electricity usage
3. Indirect emissions from products and services that the organization does not directly control (Emmision from indirect activities of the main process such as preparation and transport of the raw materials)
Carbon Foot Print Calculators
There are many online and offline carbon foot print calculators available. I choose http://www.carbonfootprint.com/ which is an online calculator which encompasses two solutions for business and individual calculations.
This calculator provides calculations on following major areas.
1. Home
2. Flights
3. Car
4. Motorbike
5. Bus and train
6. Secondary
Results – My Calculated Carbon Foot Print
Category | CO2 equivalent (tones) |
Home | 0.17 |
Flights | 0 |
Car | 0 |
Motorbike | 0 |
Bus and train | 0.37 |
Secondary | 4.72 |
Following image will illustrate the comparison of my carbon foot print with world target and Sri Lankan average
Comparison
Carbon Foot Print | Value CO2 equivalent |
My Foot Print | 5.25 |
Average footprint for people in Sri Lanka | 0.61 |
World Target to reduce climate crisis | 2 |

Ever dreamed of designing your own eco village?
Ever dreamed of designing your own eco village? Well, here’s your chance to be an eco-visionary and maybe even win €2,500 in the process! The CLEAR Village Visualization Competition is calling all architects, designers, students and anyone else who can wield a pencil or an artboard to visualize what their ideal sustainable village would look like. Does your village have leaf-shaped solar panels on every rooftop? Shops where customers have to bring their own containers to fill up on goods? A human-powered monorail? Whatever your ideas are, here is your chance to make them a reality. That’s right, the CLEAR Village is actually planning to build a real-life sustainable village, and your design could be a part of it!
