Imperial Sugar Company Explosion and Fire

On February 7, 2008, a massive explosion and fire at the Imperial Sugar plant, located northwest of Savannah, caused 13 deaths and left others critically injured with severe burns. The explosion was likely fueled by combustible sugar dust.

What went wrong? Safty engineers, employees, experts .... please add your comments here.

Dust accumulated due to a culture of negligence and focus on profitability ONLY. I would suggest calling Robert Peiser (CEO of Imperial Sugar for about the last 5 years) and John Sheptor (COO for the last 12 months until 1st of Feb when he was appointed CEO) and ask them what happened. They like to refer to what happened in Georgia as an “accident”. But the truth of the matter is, this “accident” should not have happened. The dust had accumulated to the point that you’d need a dump truck (or 2) to haul all the dust off. ANY executive should have known as soon as they walked in to the plant that they were in an unsafe environment. So why didn’t they do something? Robert Peiser is a numbers guy. John Sheptor claims to be an operations guy but isn’t. And how about the plant manager and his staff? The plant manager was recently fired and the rest of them either couldn’t get anything done due to lack of leadership/authority or just didn’t care.... Believe me. I know.
