Norweco brings safe water to third-world countries
Norweco workers in Norwalk build chlorinators and people in Haiti avoid illness.International Action, a non-profit group based in Washington, D.C., has brought clean water to more than 400,000 poor Haitians with the help of equipment from Norweco."They gave a very, very cheap price for the chlorinators. The price they charge us is peanuts," said Abdul Kanu, spokesman for International Action. He said the foundation only operates in Haiti now, but would like to expand to Africa to bring clean water to more people.Don Bach, director of sales for Norweco, said the company adapted equipment to treat drinking water after learning of the extreme need of people in poor countries."It took 15 years to put it together," he said. "With the guidance of International Action, we adapted the piping and the way we use them for drinking water."Bach said when Norweco officials learned that many children under the age of 12 die from water-born diseases in some countries, they decided they could help solve the problem. "Our major business is wastewater treatment equipment supply and we adapted some of our equipment for drinking water," he said.
Bach said the staff at International Action deserves full credit for the progress of the clean water program."They are wonderful people," Bach said, adding other charitable organizations have put in state-of-the-art equipment into communities, but never bothered to keep programs going."International Action trains local people," he said. "They figured out the formula of making it happen. International Center decided you have to have community buy-in for the project. If you don't have that, it fails."Norweco's chlorinator is now used in about 20 countries and Bach said it is also used in remote areas of the United States such as in government parks.Haiti has a high infant and mortality rate and a big part of the problem is unsafe water. International Action and Dlo Pwp, a Haitian organization, joined forces to install 100 chlorinators in 23 of the poorest neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince. Now about 400,000 residents are getting clean, safe water for the first time."The largest killer of children in all developing countries is waterborne disease such as cholera, typhoid, hepatitis and chronic diarrhea. These diseases lead to the premature and avoidable deaths of 2.6 million children each year," said Lindsay Mattison, director of International Action. "For $265, we can install a water chlorinator that lasts a generation. It will provide up to 10,000 people with clean, safe drinking water. Chlorine is becoming a major force for public health in Haiti."In Jalousie, situated in the hills above Port-au-Prince, a new chlorinator protects 50,000 people. A nurse in the area reported a major drop in chronic diarrhea cases. A municipal laboratory found that typhoid and cholera germs are no longer present in Jalousie's water. People from nearby neighborhoods are crossing into Jalousie to carry safe water to their homes.Pierre Joab, president of the local water board in Simmond Pel, said the chlorinators make a big difference. "Since International Action installed chlorinators, the rate of diarrhea and sickness of children dropped dramatically. Kids are not getting sick any more. We learned we can prevent such diseases. We'd like to keep it this way," he said.Abdul Kanu, spokesman for International Action, said his group is now working on plans to install water tanks in addition to chlorinators."The unique thing about our project is the chlorine lasts in the water for days," he said, and treated water will even overcome bacteria in containers used to carry the water. More information on International Action's water projects is available atwww.haitiwater.org.

Flexibility - The Key To Be Success
Meeting Rooms with wheeled Equipments
In Toyota factory most of things have embeded with wheels. Why? They like contiuous improvement and CI need flexibility for layout change. Look above picuture. If there are no wheels a simple layout change reqiure additional support and cost many labour hours. But with the support of wheels even the owner of brainchild of CI can do layout by him self and achive his goals with change in new layout.
Directors, Managers, Executives and workers like changes. They dream about changes. Changes will not happen easily if there is no environment to support changes. Create an envrionment which enable superb flexibility for changes.
Toyota wheeled Equipments ............ one better example for superb changing environment.

Oil Base Cooling System for CPU cooling - first of its kind solution from Hardcore Computer
When you perform complex function using your computer (simulation, rendering 3d design ... etc), I think you may have face trouble with computer slow down and being struck ... so and so. One of major reason behind it is high temperature of computer major components such as processor, VGA, ... etc. Increase temperature will limit electron transferring though nano level circuit paths of processors and other components and it causes poor performance of your computer.
Hardcore computer has come up with very innovative solution. With first of its kind submersion technology they offer
- Maximum performance as active components maintain low temperatures
- Even highly over-clocked parts keep operating due to safe, non-stressing temperatures
- Unmatched cooling capabilities—Core Coolant absorbs 10x more heat than air and circulates through our Delphi-certified radiator at 2.5 gallons/minute
- Long service life—components not subject to heat last longer
- Can perform complex functions—you’ll stop before your computer does
According engadget.com analysis hardcore computers uses a mineral oil which is not break down or rancid and a pump circulates the liquid through a side-mounted radiator for cooling while all the wet components slide out of the top for potentially mess-free maintenance.
User can lift central processing unit from submersion tank and keep up until oil drip off. Then user can remove, add, clean any part of central processing unit.
User can lift central processing unit from submersion tank
The company has U.S. Patent No. 7,403,392 for “Liquid submersion cooling system.” They are marketing this product for a price of 5560 $.

chemical engineering solutions
This volume in the Coulson and Richardson series in Chemical Engineering contains full worked solution for problems in Volume 1. This volume contains detail solutions for vol 1 questions.
Example solution:-
PROBLEM:-
It is found experimentally that the terminal settling velocity u0 of a spherical particle in a fluid is a function of the following quantities: particle diameter, d; buoyant weight of particle (weight of particle weight of displaced fluid), W; fluid density, and fluid viscosity, Obtain a relationship for u0 using dimensional analysis. Stokes established, from theoretical considerations, that for small particles which settle at very low velocities, the settling velocity is independent of the density of the fluid except in so far as this affects the buoyancy. Show that the settling velocity must then be inversely proportional to the viscosity of the fluid.

What is NaNo Technology?
WoW ..... A great technology which is changing present world and will make all future happens one day. What is nano technology, it is the science that involve in manufacturing materials, devices and machines at the nanometer, or atomic/molecular, scale. The word nano came from Greek word for “dwarf”. It means one billionth. Can you imagne that 1 nanometer is the length of three atoms. When scientists work with this range of things, they are called nano technologists.
There are two mechanism to manufacture nano scale products. "Top Down" and "Bottom Up" are that two major mechanisms. In Top Down mechanism building something by starting with a larger component and carving away material (like a sculpture).Example: patterning (using photolithography) and etching away material, as in building integrated circuits.
“Bottom-up” – building something by assembling smaller components (like building a car engine).Example: self-assembly of atoms and molecules, as in chemical and biological systems.

Green Jobs - Future for Green Hopes
UN report, 'Green Jobs: Towards Decent Work in a Sustainable, Low-Carbon World', was commissioned and funded by the UN's Environment Programme says there will be millions of green jobs by 2030. Presently there are about million people working on biofuels and according to the above report it will raise upto 12 million by 2030. These green jobs will basically focus on shifting between crude oil based product to solar, biofules, wind ... etc. It will also focus on expansion of recycling and making environmentally friendly vehicles.
BioFules - 12 million
Manufacture, installation and maintenance of solar panels - 6.3 million
Wind power - 2 million
People presently work hard on green technology research will have bright future and I think present scenario in computer and mobile gadget will be the future situation in green technology.
Everyone will look into it and will need to add it to their life. ........

No Plug - No Deal
Sustainability of Carbon Credit Trading
"It is a deal to reduce greenhouse gases that cause dangerous climate change, major polluters can now buy carbon credits that allow them to pay someone else to reduce emissions instead of cutting their own pollution."
According to this method an industrialist in Scotland in oil industry will pay a so called green business in Brazil. But do you ever think about people in the vicinity of both projects.
Following story is such an occasion. This is a story which shows an another view of "Carbon Credit Trading"

What is Love? & What is Marrage?
What is Love?
A student asks a teacher: What is love?
The teacher said: in order to answer your question, go to the paddy field and choose the biggest paddy and come back.
But the rule is: you can go through them only once and cannot turn back to pick.
The student went to the field, go thru first row, he saw one big paddy, but he wonders....may be there is a bigger one later. Then he saw another bigger one... but may be there is an even bigger one waiting for him.
Later, when he finished more than half of the paddy field, he start to realize that the paddy is not as big as the previous one he saw, he know he has missed the biggest one, and he regretted. So, he ended up went back to the teacher with empty hand.
The teacher told him, this is love... you keep looking for a better one, but when later you realize, you have already miss the person
What is Marrage?
The student asked: What is marriage then?
The teacher said: In order to answer your question, go to the corn field and choose the biggest corn and come back.
But the rule is: you can go through them only once and cannot turn back to pick.
The student went to the corn field, this time he is careful not to repeat the previous mistake, when he reach the middle of the field, he has picked one medium corn that he feel satisfied, and came back to the teacher.
The teacher told him, this time you bring back a corn.... you look for one that is just nice, and you have faith and believe this is the best one you get.... this is marriage.

Innovation, the key to face “GSP + challenge”
The apparel industry is one of leading export revenue earner and it is employing over 300000 people and majority of them from rural community. The Sri Lankan apparel giant MAS Holdings is itself employing 45000 people. Apparel industry can be considered as one of women empowering mechanism due to high female worker involvement. It is employing over 80 % women in various positions and this can be considered as a good option to empower women. Recently I read a “MAS women go beyond” project magazine and it shows how apparel industry has helped them to go beyond their challenges.
However, the apparel industry is facing a big challenge these days. In the end of this year EU will take a crucial decision over GSP + benefits by referring outstanding human right reports of government of Sri Lanka, report of the international Group of Eminent persons and many human right documentations. These reports will be key parameters of evaluation process of renewing GSP + benefits. The GSP + benefits are crucial for development and continuity of apparel industry. Unfortunately above parameters are not under control of apparel industry.
However in the end of this year we must be in a position to accept the decision of EU on GSP + benefits whatever it will be positive or negative. Increasing strength and identifying opportunities are the best way to over come challenges of corporate sector. Increasing profit margins with innovative steps will reduce the effect of any kind of challenge.
Innovations in production, planning, finance, marketing, enterprise resource handling, sourcing and many more key areas will enhance the strength of industry to face any kind of challenge including GSP plus. As an independent nation we can not except subsidies forever from developed nations because they often use that as a tool to control developing nations.
So it is time optimize our apparel industry in order to face any global challenge. We must develop our industry in every dimension. This kind of multi dimensional approach towards development of industry with dramatically reduces cost of production. Through less cost of production, we can go to international market with more competitive prices. If we can embed unique quality and tag reasonable price on our product; any kind of barriers will not affect the industry.
We do not want to worry about uncontrollable parameters. Apparel industrialists or employees are not responsible or not in a position to control and maintain human rights in Sri Lanka. However, control over apparel process is on their hand. Quality and cost of production is in their control.
A sustainable human resource policy, waste minimization, operational time reductions, eliminating non-value adding functions, new production technologies, improved and in built quality are some of key areas to increase quality and reduce cost of production.
One of leading apparel industry in Sri Lanka, MAS holdings produces 300 million garments products per annum. Can you think about the effect of a cost reduction of one rupee on every product through multi dimensional approach? It will save 300 million rupees for company. It will lead the company into a sustainable and strong business environment. Normally an apparel company consists of various divisions to produce complete garments. So a few cents saving per each unit in each department will finally end up with rupee or more cost reduction per each unit. . Any industry can do such thing and achieve unbelievable cost reduction. We can take Toyota’s Camry 600 $ reduction effort which ended up in 800 $ cost saving per each unit as an example.

Our department move to new loaction
With this state of art facility, I think quality of DCPE curricular will improve dramatically. We looses many of our potentials due to lack of facilities. I think with IRQUE funds our department will reach the top rank of our university. I hope it will become a key institute in Asia if we continue our effort forever.

Sharing Knowledge and exposing to Web
We are in Department of Chemical Engineering University of Moratuwa doing great academic and industrial research projects. We have our own limitations with financial support comparing to some foreign university research budgets. But we are doing our best to deliver our professional works to world.
But sharing student and there research information is lacking. Today world is getting closing and we can share information with people anywhere in world. WWW is great innovation in previous century and it is becoming stronger in this century. In 1990s .com boom explore the business potential of WWW. Before 1990s scientist established proper way to share research information among each other.
Let us found out way to share our information at least now. I know there is academic paper publications, conferences and many more tools to share our research activities. But why we go behind them and waiting their approval for publishing them. They can reject our whole research publication because of single grammatical mistake or spelling mistake. But according to my view we do not mind about petty mistake and allow that idea to play major role in Industry.
As example if a student come up with proper alternative system. We need such ideas with out any delay and make them to happen in industry. I think rather going behind foreign scientists to approve our research papers we can share it among each other and come up with industrial scale solutions.
I think building up chemical engineers’ network on web as alternative to break barriers in information sharing. I have build up chemical engineers’ network and it contains more than 200 chemical engineers and we can share our research and industrial knowledge among each other.

Guru Upahara
Today we pay our great gratitude for our dearest lecture panel because we are about to leave our department. From 2nd of June we will finish our 4 year long journey. Iran Watapotha presented very emotional speech on behalf of every student. I could not explain my feelings when he talked about our great relationship in between lectures and students. The relationship between student and lecturers are very unique and I suggest our university community to imitate our relationship model.
We have very talented and young lecture panel; with foreign industrial and academic exposure. They delivered their maximum performance to educate and guide us to become a graduate with strong academic background. We realized their wisdom which they gradually gain in their higher studies while listing them in lecture hours. Actually it is more than enough and it is their duty as lectures. But they did not stop on that point. They work further to enhance our quality and relevance to industrial world.
We can be proud of our lecture panel. Not because of that they are from world top universities. Not because of their wealth and fleet of brand new cars. But because of their generosity, humanity and actual dedication towards us.

we do not want to do financial analysis when we see dreams
In 1897 a Canadian-born chemist Herbert Henry Dow extracted bromine from brine solution using his newly find out method. Initially the company depended on bleach and potassium bromide which were extracted. But now Dow Chemical is operating with seven major operating segments.
In 2007
It was a company with
Revenue = ▲$53.513 Billion USD (2007)
Net income = ▲$2.887 Billion USD (2007) [This is equal to a half of Sri Lankan export earning]
Employees 46,000 (2007)
In every Sri Lankan Salterns brine solution is pumped back to ocean. But it is very valuable input for chemical industry and we are neglecting a huge profit making potential. Brine is electrolyzed in the chloralkali process to make sodium hydroxide, chlorine and hydrogen, as well as the hypochlorite and chlorate salts on an industrial scale.
You can imagine the wealth we can earn with this chemicals using following figures
Sodium Hydroxide –
50lb Bag of Sodium Hydroxide PELS can be sell in range of 94 $ (usd) [ aprox :Rs 9600]
55lb Bag of Sodium Hydroxide Flake can be sell in range of 103 $ (usd) [ aprox :Rs 10400]
Chlorine can be sold at $220 to $240 per ton
Hydrogen @ $2.60/kg [This is quite old data]
I know chemical business is not a simple one. We need complex market analysis and ecomomic analysis in feasibility study.
“But we do not want to do financial analysis when we see dreams.” This is the answer which were given to one of our student by Indian professor. That student ask about financial feasibility of biogas system.
