William Edwards Deming

Prof. Ajith de Alwis distributed an article among us and asked us to read it. The article was about William Edwards Deming. But every one has forgotten to read it when he asked about it in today lecture. William Edwards Deming was an American statistician who worked on improving production improvements using statical process analysis. He was a college professor, author, lecturer, and consultant who did very big service to uplift production processes in manufacturing premises. He taught top management how to improve design (and thus service), product quality, testing and sales (the last through global markets). Initially this man was not taken into granted by US people but he worked with Japanese and taught them how to use his ideas for total quality management . He targeted sensible improvement with in five years but Japanese people were bright enough to caught his ideas and improved their product quality within four years. ("Japana Hapana", A sinhala saying [Japanese People are clever]).

American people got to know about this person when they search the secret behind the rapid increment on Japanese Product's quality. But when William Edwards Deming was only beginning to win widespread recognition in the U.S. at the time of his death.

This is very good lesson for us. We normally do not care about people who come up with new ideas and innovation. But they might have capacity to build up our country .

Environmental aspects of manufacturing plants

This level 4 semester 2 subject was started today and it is conducted by one of best industrial engineer of Sri Lanka, Dr. (Eng) Dhammika Welhenge. At the start I thought this will be a boring subject which we are already familiar. But when the discussion process gone in to the deepest area I realised the importance of the subject. The present environmental aspects what we are dealing with are only small part of the real aspects of environment which are caused by industries. He focused us on some environmental aspects which we never thought about.

Normally we are dead against with plants which are emitting fumes and effluents. But if we do not do a proper environmental impact analysis (EIA), a water bottling plant which uses ground water can be harmful. But we do not see any harm from this kind of cool and calm factories. Actually environmental aspects of industrial activities are similar as ice burg. The effects which are shown and known are very small. The rest will slowly destroy our blue planet for ever.

Nobel Peace Price 2007

Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. won the great Nobel peace price. It was offered "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change" This is the second time which the Nobel peace price gone for environmental activities. The Peace word means a solution for war to us. It is because of 24 years long war which is affected every aspect of our country. But The Peace word means in wide scope. The progress of mankind in calm way is strength by many activities. Hunger, thirst, violence, environment issues, gender issues … etc are some facts affect the journey of mankind for a better tomorrow. That is why this kind of every aspect is taken into granted when giving Nobel Peace price.

WtE Waste to Energy, sustainable example from UK.

WtE have triple bottom line benefits to society. It contributes to fulfill energy requirements of nation while solving environment hazardous solid waste problem. It also adds value to waste and generate more income to people who engage with that waste.

This wonderful example of WtE project is from UK. (contacts). The Energy Power Resources Limited runs 5 power plants from two kind of waste. Straw and poultry waste. They have five power plants Ely, Thetford, Eye,Westfield and Glanford.

Renewable energy with plug and play technology

Renewable energy resources in most of case claim a pre energy source. Renewable energy sources such as biogas, solar power (photo voltaic), wind power … etc are come as an alternative energy sources for remote area or poor communities. I think with the rapid increases of fossil oil prices and thermal electricity, renewable energy should be introduced as another energy sources but not as pre-energy sources which is supplied until electricity or fossil energy sources reach the community.

To popularized and stabilized the renewable energy sources among communities these technologies must developed in a manner which is smart and easy to install and maintain. Simply with plug and play manner. People will find more comfortable when they deal with a biogas plant which is made out of plastic. The plastic shell will definitely have no leakages and easy to handle. The aesthetical beauty will increase with such a system in household level or in a farm.

Energy engineers who deal with this kind of new areas of intermediate technologies must have awareness of people’s attitudes. We must think of people comfort when we develop technologies. While most people having fun with switching to electricity from national grid we will scarifies to struggle with renewable sources. So we must research on renewable energy with having a sense on plug and play technology.

Methanol Production Plant in Sri Lanka

One of my blog readers had asked me about availability of methanol production plant in Sri Lanka before few months ago. I had semester exam and my project works so I forget to write about it. There is no Methanol production facility in Sri Lanka. But in our department there is ongoing project to design a process which can be used to manufacture methanol from saw dust. Saw dust is widely available waste in Sri Lanka and it is a huge environment issue. This project will add a value to saw dust and also solve major environment issue by using this solid waste for a production process.
This project is a final year comprehensive design project. Thesedays initial step of the design are being carried out.

learning Simulink

Today I started learning Simulink, a Mathlab based simulation tool which can be used for complex simulation tasks of process engineering. I am a novice to Simulink so I download some tutorials from Internet and follow their instructions. I simulated a very simple example which is an elementary example of A/L physics, the motion of a train under driving force and air resistance.
The process simulation is a subject offered to us in this semester. Before starting that subject I thought to cover up necessary background studies.

Oxypura

World’s largest manufacturer of coconut shell based activated carbon Haycarb Limited has marketed a activated carbon based face mask. This face masks come under three basic sub types Oxypura CITY, Oxypura AGRO and Oxypura INDUSTRIAL. Each types of mask are customized with multilayer protection with pollutant - specific activated carbon layer sandwiched between two particulate matter filters, which filter-out harmful gases and particles enabling users to breathe clean and odourless air.

Oxypura masks are priced at Rs. 75 (AGRO), Rs. 85 (INDUSTRIAL) and Rs. 115 (CITY) making them economical to use. Each mask can be used for up to a month, and would cost the user of a CITY mask less than Rs. 4 a day for protection against most toxic elements in the atmosphere.

State of Art Technologies in CP industry

When I read CPE magazine for my project studies I came across a advertisement from HEL group of companies. It was interesting. So keep their web address in memory and pay a visit over their web pages. HEL Ltd. is an international company specialising in automated, research-scale laboratory equipment for the process, fine chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. The crystallizer which was embedded with PC system which can be used to control crystallization process and evaluate solubility , metastable region and supersolubility was a interesting article.

When our lecturers teach us crystallization I was wonder how we analyzes the supersaturation and metastable region separately. But with added from this kind of computer aided reactors it is not a complex target.
