Can we accept this?

"A solid waste consultant back from Sri Lanka tells me what he saw when the trucks reach the dumps of Colombo, the capital. The people rush forward first. Then the cows a head of the pigs and the goats because of they are bigger. Last the crows. A miserable way of life? Undoubtedly ......" * extracted from National Geographic

This was a quote which is told by a consultant who gone back from Sri Lanka. This is a completely narrow minded saying about a country. I do not have words to explain my feeling about this quote. But I will write a similar situation which was happen in india.

In many decades ago a British expert had been criticised that "The sewer water of London is bacteriologically superior to the milk of Bombay" **. What was the reaction of them to this pig headed quote. Dr. Verghese Kurien took this as a challenge and drew the country to be one of front-ranker in milk production.

The above quote about our nation is must taken serious. We want to establish proper vision & mission on our nation. We must start our individual role in developing this country. Even a little man has a great responsibility. These statements must be taken as challenges.

Please let this message to spread

Beauty of Chemical Engineering

Human Development Index - Sri Lanka

Our HDI value is 0.751 and our rank is 93. This is the best performance of South Asia and worst country of our region is Bangladesh and its rank is 139 and HDI value is 0.520. The HDI is a evaluation tool which is going beyond per capita income. When we analyzing about status of a country with per capita income the poverty and other dark sides undermine with the income of economical giants of that country. As example when we calculating our per capita income definitely there will be incomes of 10% people who enjoy 80% of wealth of country. But HDI is somewhat strong tool to measure the present dimensions of human development of a country.

(HDI value is according to 2005 analysis - Ref.

Following New Paths

Nine students of our senior batch (who recently passed out) have chosen new carrier path while others are hunting traditional carriers. They have initiated a chemical and process plant designing company. They have registered their company name and the happiest news is that they have been able to undertake six new designing at the initial state. They are working delicately on their business and soon they will succeed. I hope very bright future for them.

Our department encourage entrepreneurship by providing opportunities to participate entrepreneurship programs. I can remember some of students from above group participated an entrepreneurship workshop. I think that entrepreneurship workshop would give the initiative to start their own business.

Our university is provide basic idea on small business and entrepreneurship by delivering lectures in management stream on "small business and entrepreneurship".

The above mentioned entrepreneurship workshop was conducted one of sri lankan small business incubators.

Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer which is occurred due to previous exposure to asbestos. This disease cause malignant cells developing in mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on professions where they exposed asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibre in other ways, such as by washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos (housewife or housemaids), or by home renovation using asbestos cement products. Unlike lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking.

malignant cells developing in mesothelium

Signs and symptoms

Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos.

Mesothelioma that affects the pleura can cause these signs and symptoms:

  • chest wall pain
  • pleural effusion, or fluid surrounding the lung
  • shortness of breath
  • fatigue or anemia
  • wheezing, hoarseness, or cough
  • blood in the sputum (fluid) coughed up
In severe cases of the disease

  • blood clots in the veins, which may cause thrombophlebitis
  • disseminated intravascular coagulation, a disorder causing severe bleeding in many body organs
  • jaundice, or yellowing of the eyes and skin
  • low blood sugar level
  • pleural effusion
  • pulmonary emboli, or blood clots in the arteries of the lungs
  • severe ascites
mesothelioma treatment options

  • Surgery
  • Radiation
  • Chemotherapy
  • Immunotherapy

Collection centres for recyclable items in Panadura Urban Council

Panadura urban council has put great step forward by implementing some collection centres for recyclable items. They have established collection centres near Galle road, Panadura – Ratnapura road. This is now available for three types of recyclable items; Paper, Polythene or Plastics and Glass metal. There are three separate counters to put those materials. People suppose to segregate their waste into three categories and put into hole by themselves. They have implement colour code.

Understand the concept of integrated solid waste management with respect to solid waste generated

Understanding integrated solid waste management practices of local authorities is very much essential for environment engineering student in order to be a smart solution provider in his future carrier. While most of people view over this solid waste problem with wide variety of views, we must get into this problem with engineering point of view. The scope of engineering is the problem solving with solid mathematical, physics, chemistry and biological background. Anyhow analyzing present scenario of integrated solid waste management practices is very mush essential prior to coming up with practicable solution. Solid waste is the heaviest burden of any urban council and they practice solid waste management strategies to encounter the burning issues. As my hometown Kadugannawa, which owns the smallest urban council in Sri Lanka is far away for walk through to collect information at this movement. Therefore, I select Panadura Urban council as my study area.

In my humble study on integrated solid waste management practices, I investigated about following important points.

ü Practices in source reducing such as recycling, composting, … etc

ü Collection

ü Transport and transferring methods solid waste

ü On-site storage

ü How they process solid waste?

ü Disposal methods

I did this study with my best effort and finally came up with some proposals, suggestions and comments on present practices of solid waste management in Panadura area.
